Anatomy of a Painting
On Friday, I had a desire to paint. Haven't had that urge in quite some time. Looking at videos of Connie Hozvicka of Dirty Footprints Studio painting the feminine, I was inspired to do some intuitive painting. Here is the transformation. You can click on each to see more clearly.

I find intuitive painting to be quite fascinating. I worked on another one at the same time but left it in the ugly creature stage until another time.

Evolution of a Painting
I'm really enjoying myself with this 21 Secrets workshops. I've sort of lost track of which workshop is influencing me as I paint. The ones I've taken so far: Flow, Intuitive Painted Layers, 15 Minutes to Sanity, and Journal Quest, are similar in that you start with a painted background and "excavate" (Tracie Hanson's term) for shapes and symbols. It feels like intuitive painting as I go from stage to stage of a painting. Here is an example:
Perhaps this wasn't as "intuitive" as it could have been. However, I was quite pleased to find these shapes.
I started with journaling. I used a cool color pallet and scrapped paint onto the paper. With pencil, I began "excavate" and outline shapes. I immediately saw human shapes; probably influenced by my journaling.
I then painted the shapes and then the negative space. For some reason, I was drawn to paint one shape my favorite turquoise - it's heavy body so quite dark. But something told me to leave it. I thought the shape about "her" was the mentor so I drew in a face shape and hair. Doing that, she somehow seemed to lose power. I left it overnight, not knowing where I'd go with it.
When I returned to it I saw the need to erase the face and hair. I then saw the "mentor" in the lower left corner. She looks like a woman in prayer. Following my instinct (intuition), I added gold glitter to the shape around the dark "head". I also added gold symbols and lines around the edges of the painting.
I've named it "Ancient Voices" as that was the CD I was listening to and it seems to fit. I'm not sure if I'll do any more to this, like filling in the spaces with doodles or details ... for now it seems complete.

Banner Day
Yesterday was a BANNER DAY for me. It was COOLER and I had ENERGY and I MADE ART. I decided to do some of the 21 Secrets classes before the end of the year gets here and I've wasted my money!
This is from Connie Hozvicka's class called Flow. This piece felt very intuitive with several steps and layers.
I incorporated journaling as first layer from the other class and wrote about getting back to creating and finding ways to bring beauty into the world. I really like this technique - journaling as the first layer - even when the words are completely covered. There is something about the process of lighting a candle and setting your intention before creating ... something I have done in the past but forgot about.
I finished this banner day making a colorful and tasty meal of grilled salmon, baked yams, and stir fry kale. Crushed and cooked raspberries as a sauce for the salmon. Oh so good!
It felt like a fall day today. I'm so tired of the heat. I hope this coolness lasts but the season for Santa Ana winds is approaching. I miss autumn here in Southern California. Perhaps we should take a trek up a mountain to see some color!

| Slow Journey |
This was inspired by the class with Gina Rossi Armfield called 15 Minutes to Sanity. I selected a passage by Mary Oliver as the journaling (which is done before adding paint).
What does it mean, say the words, that the earth is so beautiful? And what shall I do about it? What is the gift that I should bring to the world? What is the life that I should lead?
I selected the image because it was the only "animal" image I could find during a quick search. It turns out that the turtle represents the slow journey back to art. Back to bringing beauty into the world. Back to my gifts. While this took more than 15 minutes, it was a joyful time.

| Autumn |
- Light a candle
- Journaling
- Gesso
- Play with paint to cover background (acrylic paint). Loved getting messy with finger painting :-)
- Draw lines and shapes (pencil and black acrylic paint)
- I painted the shapes white (acrylic paint)
- Then colored them with water soluble oil pastels
- For some reason I was led to paint over the background with white paint. Not sure why but I followed the voice.
- Colored in the background with acrylic paints and oil pastels (really looks much better!)
- Repainted the shape outline
- Added texture and interest with stamping and stenciling.
